On April 4, 2013, the Michigan Supreme Court appointed 18 circuit court judges around the State to handle cases between businesses in which at least $25,000 is at stake. The Southeast Michigan appointments include:
3rd Circuit Court (Wayne County): Judge Jeanne Stempien
22nd Circuit Court (Washtenaw County): Judge Archie Brown
6th Circuit Court (Oakland County): Judge James Alexander and Judge Wendy Potts
38th Circuit Court (Monroe County): Judge Michael W. LaBeau
16th Circuit Court (Macomb County): Judge John C. Foster
The idea is that it is better to have a “Business Court” judge handling a business or commercial dispute rather than a family law judge, a criminal law judge, or another Judge who may not have business experience. Time will tell whether this will turn out as planned, but the process has been several years in the works and more than 200 lawyers worked on the grass roots committees that recommended the framework for the Business Court.
